Governor Greg Abbott met with U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon to discuss recent legislative achievements related to education in Texas. The meeting focused on the outcomes of the 89th legislative session, which Governor Abbott described as significant for parents, students, and educators across the state.

Governor Abbott emphasized that Texas has taken major steps to improve its education system. He pointed out that new investments include $8.5 billion allocated for public education and $3.5 billion dedicated to teacher pay raises. According to Governor Abbott, these measures provide more opportunities for Texans involved in education.

He also referenced a new law establishing what he called “the nation’s largest day-one school choice program,” intended to give families greater control over their children’s educational paths.

Secretary McMahon shared her observations from a visit to Alpha School’s Austin Campus, where she spoke with graduates now attending college. She highlighted how some Texas schools are using artificial intelligence as an educational tool, saying it helps students learn how to ask questions that deepen their understanding of course materials.

“Governor Abbott highlighted the monumental steps Texas has taken to make our state No. 1 in educating children. He noted that Texas parents, students, and educators now have more opportunities to reach their full potential,” according to a statement from his office.

“The Governor touted recent investments into our educators and students, with $8.5 billion in new funding for public education and an historic $3.5 billion for teacher pay raises,” his office added.

“Governor Abbott also highlighted signing the nation’s largest day-one school choice program into law to empower Texas families to choose the education pathway that is best for their child.”

“The Secretary noted the innovation of Texas schools using artificial intelligence as a beneficial tool to assist students in learning how to ask the right questions to better understand educational materials.”

Additional photos from the meeting will be made available at a later date.
