Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $10.9 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 37 organizations serving veterans and their families in North Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) administers these grants, which are expected to support over 4,500 veterans across 32 counties.
“Texas is grateful for the brave men and women who selflessly served our country in the greatest military in the world,” Governor Abbott said. “The more than $10.9 million in grant funding will provide significant support and services to our veterans and their families in North Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth, including clinical counseling, service dog programs, and financial assistance. Texas will always support those who bravely put their lives on the line to defend our nation and our freedom.”
TVC Commission Secretary Chuck Wright also commented on the awards: “I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans. Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in the lives of those who served. The North Texas and DFW area has a strong military community, and it is home to many veterans. It’s great seeing the community give back to those who served.”
Secretary Wright presented the grants at an event held at the Denton County Courthouse in Denton.
Organizations receiving funding include Adaptive Training Foundation ($345,000), Baylor Research Institute ($500,000), Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star ($100,000), Boulder Crest Foundation ($50,000), Canine Companions for Independence ($350,000), Citizens Development Center ($260,000), as well as various city governments such as Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Collin County, among others. The grants cover a range of services including clinical counseling, service dog programs, financial assistance, skill-based training support, homeless veteran support initiatives, housing assistance under Housing for Texas Heroes program, peer support services, veteran small business support programs and Veterans Treatment Courts.
Earlier this year in May 2025 Governor Abbott announced $46.3 million awarded through over 200 grants benefiting 175 organizations statewide—expected to directly assist nearly 40,000 veterans along with their dependents and surviving spouses.
Since its inception in 2009 through the current grant cycle (2025-2026), FVA has distributed more than $359 million via over 1,600 grants across Texas.
The TVC provides these funds through five main categories: General Assistance; Housing for Texas Heroes; Veterans Mental Health Grants; Veterans Treatment Courts; and Veteran County Service Officers. Services supported by these funds include emergency financial aid; transportation; legal help; family services; home modifications; rental or mortgage assistance.
Funding is generated primarily from special games offered by the Texas Lottery that are designated for veteran causes. Additional contributions come from donations made during vehicle registration or when purchasing hunting or fishing licenses.
