Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $7.7 million in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 28 organizations serving the San Antonio and South-Central Texas region. The grants, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), are expected to provide services to over 6,000 veterans and their families across 40 counties.

“Texas will always honor the sacrifices of veterans who courageously served our country,” said Governor Abbott. “These Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services to help them thrive in San Antonio and South-Central Texas. Our state will never forget our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our nation.”

“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in lives of those who served. The San Antonio area is home to many veterans including myself. It’s great to see our community giving back to those who served.”

The grant presentation took place at Meals on Wheels San Antonio, with Chairwoman Koerner awarding funds directly to recipient organizations.

The FVA grant recipients include a range of local groups providing services such as transportation, housing support, financial assistance, clinical counseling, peer support services, homeless veteran support, skill-based training, food assistance, and legal aid through Veterans Treatment Courts.

Some notable awards include:
– Alamo Area Council of Governments received $250,000 for transportation services and $350,000 for Housing for Texas Heroes.
– Bexar County Commissioners Court was awarded funds for Veterans Treatment Courts and financial assistance programs.
– Family Endeavors, Inc. received a total of $950,000 split between financial assistance and clinical counseling.

Earlier this year in May 2025,Governor Abbott announced a record-breaking $46.3 million distributed through over 200 grants statewide—projected to serve nearly 40,000 veterans along with their dependents and surviving spouses.

Since the inception of the program in 2009 through the current grant cycle covering 2025–2026,more than $359 million has been distributed via over 1,600 FVA grants.
