The U.S. Census Bureau has announced that the 2020-2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates will be made available to embargo subscribers starting January 27 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The general public release is scheduled for January 29.
The ACS offers detailed statistics on topics such as language spoken at home, education, commuting patterns, employment, mortgage status and rent, income, poverty levels, and health insurance coverage. According to the Census Bureau, it remains the only source of local estimates for most of these subjects.
Embargo subscribers will have early access to these statistics covering a range of geographic areas including all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional and state legislative districts, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, places, census tracts, and block groups.
The embargo period runs from January 27 at 10 a.m. ET until January 29 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this time, wire services and distribution outlets are not permitted to release news stories or data files related to the survey before the end of the embargo period. The Census Bureau directs interested parties to its embargo policy for further details.
All data products—including those on data.census.gov, through the API, summary files, and other tools—will become publicly accessible by 10 a.m. ET on January 29.
Those wishing to register for embargo access can do so by visiting www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
