Approximately 56 employees at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). This move follows a campaign focused on achieving fair compensation, clearer career advancement opportunities, and increased workplace representation.
IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative Adante Balke commented on the development: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”
The new union members will begin negotiating their first contract with Discovery World management. Their goals include improving wages and benefits, expanding career opportunities, and establishing mechanisms for raising workplace concerns without fear of retaliation. According to IAM representatives, collective bargaining will provide these workers with a formal voice in decisions affecting their jobs.
During the organizing process, some workers expressed concerns about management’s actions. These included alleged anti-union tactics aimed at discouraging employees from organizing and the reported firing of an employee who supported unionization.
Discovery World staff play an important role in supporting the museum’s interactive exhibits, events, and educational programs for families and students.
IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli said: “The IAM Union is proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family. We would like to give special thanks to Milwaukee Common Council Members Alderman Alex Brower, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman for standing in solidarity with Discovery World workers and supporting their right to organize. We stand ready to support them as they move toward a strong first contract that reflects their value, protects their rights, and ensures Discovery World remains a place where workers and the community can thrive together.”
The IAM Union represents around 600,000 active and retired members across several industries throughout North America.
