Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources in anticipation of severe weather expected across Texas this week. The move comes as forecasts indicate the possibility of heavy rainfall, flash flooding, tornadoes, and an increased wildfire threat in West Texas.
“The State of Texas is ready to swiftly respond to severe weather expected across the state this week,” Governor Abbott said. “State and local emergency response personnel are on standby to support Texas communities through the potential heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and tornadoes across Texas and wildfire threats in West Texas. Texans are urged to monitor weather, make an emergency plan, and heed the guidance of state and local officials to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.”
The National Weather Service has predicted that multiple rounds of severe storms could affect the northern half of the state starting today through the end of the week. Risks include large hail, damaging winds, possible tornadoes, heavy rain, and flash flooding. These hazards may extend further south as the week continues.
In addition to preparing for severe storms, Governor Abbott instructed TDEM to mobilize more wildfire response resources due to ongoing conditions affecting various communities. This builds on previous deployments last month when similar dangers were present.
The Texas A&M Forest Service is closely monitoring increased wildfire risks particularly threatening western parts of Texas. Residents are advised to stay alert for changing weather conditions and take precautions for their safety and property.
To support local responses for both severe weather and wildfires, several agencies have been activated:
– The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1) will provide swiftwater rescue boat squads.
– The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is deploying game wardens, rescue boat teams, and helicopters equipped with hoists.
– The Texas Department of State Health Services will supply medics, ambulances, all-terrain vehicles as part of its Severe Weather Support Packages.
– The Texas A&M Forest Service is dispatching firefighters along with equipment such as fire engines and aircraft for firefighting operations.
– The Texas National Guard will use Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters capable of firefighting missions.
– Personnel from the Texas Department of Transportation will monitor road conditions statewide.
– The Department of Public Safety is making available helicopters with hoist capabilities as well as highway patrol troopers.
– Disaster Assessment Agents from the AgriLife Extension Service will assist with agricultural needs.
– Power outage monitoring is being handled by the Public Utility Commission coordinating with utility providers.
– The Railroad Commission will oversee natural gas supplies in contact with industry representatives.
– Environmental quality staff will conduct air/water/wastewater monitoring.
