Governor Greg Abbott has announced that two Austin-area schools will receive a combined total of $405,954 in grants aimed at supporting career and technical education programs. The Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, provided by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), are intended to help the schools purchase and install equipment for training students in high-demand fields such as welding and HVAC mechanics.
“In our state’s booming economy, Texas is providing students important resources and opportunities to succeed in our growing workforce,” said Governor Abbott. “These JET grants will provide students with the tools and training they need to secure good-paying jobs and promising career opportunities. By investing in the success of our students, we are building a more skilled workforce to keep Texas strong.”
TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Joe Esparza emphasized the economic impact of these grants: “The JET grant program is a powerful tool for both the local and state economy,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Joe Esparza said. “Today’s grants will help these two schools address current and future demand by training hundreds of students for good-paying jobs as HVAC mechanics and welders.”
Commissioner Esparza presented the awards earlier today during a ceremony held at Austin Community College Riverside Campus, which was attended by state officials, local leaders, and school staff.
The funding includes a $64,774 grant awarded to Austin Community College District to train 120 students as HVAC mechanics. Granger Independent School District received $341,180 to train 75 students as welders through a partnership with Texas State Technical College – East Williamson County.
JET grants are funded by the Texas Legislature every two years. The TWC uses this funding to offset start-up costs associated with developing or expanding career-focused education programs at public community colleges, technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. All equipment purchased through these grants must be used for student training in occupations identified as high-demand within the state. Awards for the current fiscal year have not yet been announced but are expected to be published soon.
