Governor Greg Abbott appointed Jose Ayala, D.P.M. and Rahul Patel and reappointed Joe E. Martin, Jr., D.P.M. to the Podiatric Medical Examiners Advisory Board for terms set to expire on February 1, 2031, according to a Mar. 18 announcement. The Advisory Board provides advice and recommendations to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on technical matters relevant to the regulation of the practice of podiatry.

The appointments are significant as they help guide regulatory decisions affecting podiatric medicine in Texas, which impacts both practitioners and patients across the state.

Jose Ayala, D.P.M., from Brownsville, is currently chief medical officer at Tenet Healthcare. He is involved with professional organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Ayala holds degrees from the University of Puerto Rico and Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine.

Rahul Patel, based in San Antonio, is an attorney serving as managing partner at Patel Gaines, PLLC. He has founded Alamo Angels and Citizens for Appraisal Reform and participates in several professional committees including one for the Texas Association of Property Tax Professionals. Patel also supports mentorship programs at St. Mary’s Law School. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor from Cooley Law School.

Joe E. Martin Jr., D.P.M., from College Station, is retired after a 36-year career as a podiatrist at Baylor Scott & White Clinics. He is a life member and former president of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association and board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

According to the official website, Governor Abbott’s office has contributed to job growth in Texas, maintained its primary offices in Austin at the State Insurance Building, earned recognition when Abbott was listed among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024, focused on job creation, economic opportunities, education enhancement, individual liberties protection, parental empowerment in schooling, southern border security since his election in 2014, and exercised authority statewide.
