Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to ensure that counties and cities comply with federal and state roadway safety guidelines. The directive emphasizes the removal of political ideologies from public roadways.
“Texans expect their taxpayer dollars to be used wisely, not advance political agendas on Texas roadways,” Governor Abbott stated. “Today, I directed the Texas Department of Transportation to ensure Texas counties and cities remove any and all political ideologies from our streets. To keep Texans moving safely and free from distraction, we must maintain a safe and consistent transportation network across Texas. Any city that refuses to comply with the federal road standards will face consequences including the withholding or denial of state and federal road funding and suspension of agreements with TxDOT.”
According to existing regulations, only markings, signage, or signals that directly support traffic control or safety are allowed on roads. This means symbols, flags, or other surface markings that convey social, political, or ideological messages are not permitted.
The governor’s order warns that non-compliance may result in cities losing state or federal road funding and having their agreements with TxDOT suspended.
