Texas Governor Greg Abbott has renewed the disaster proclamation concerning border security for several counties in the state. The original proclamation was issued on May 31, 2021, under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code. It certified that an increase in individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border posed an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster to multiple Texas counties and state agencies.
Governor Abbott noted that he had amended the initial proclamation through subsequent orders to update the list of affected counties and continue declaring a state of disaster for those areas.
According to Abbott, “the certified conditions continue to exist and pose an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster as set forth in the prior proclamations.”
The renewed proclamation applies to over sixty counties, including Aransas, Brewster, Cameron, El Paso, Hidalgo, Maverick, Starr, Webb, Zapata, Zavala Counties among others. All previous orders and authorizations related to this disaster remain in effect.
“In accordance with the authority vested in me by Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code,” Abbott stated, “I do hereby renew the aforementioned proclamation and declare a disaster for [the listed counties] and for all state agencies affected by this disaster. All orders, directions, suspensions, and authorizations provided in the Proclamation of May 31, 2021, as amended and renewed in subsequent proclamations, are in full force and effect.”
The renewal ensures continued legal support for state actions regarding border security operations.
Abbott signed the document on January 17, 2026. Jane Nelson attested as Secretary of State.
