Texas Governor Greg Abbott renewed the state’s border security disaster proclamation on March 18, extending the declaration for dozens of counties and all affected state agencies. The renewal follows the original proclamation issued on May 31, 2021, which cited a surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border as an ongoing and imminent threat.
The continued renewal of this disaster proclamation highlights ongoing concerns about border security and its impact on communities across Texas. The order keeps in effect all previous directives, suspensions, and authorizations related to the emergency.
Abbott said in the official statement: “WHEREAS, I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, issued a disaster proclamation on May 31, 2021, certifying under Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code that the surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border posed an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster for a number of Texas counties and for all state agencies affected by this disaster; … WHEREAS, the certified conditions continue to exist and pose an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster as set forth in the prior proclamations; NOW, THEREFORE … I do hereby renew the aforementioned proclamation and declare a disaster for [listed counties] and for all state agencies affected by this disaster. All orders … are in full force and effect.” The document was attested by Secretary of State Jane Nelson.
