IAM District 776 in Fort Worth has dedicated its union hall atrium to Robert Martinez Jr., a local native and retired International President of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The tribute honors Martinez’s 43-year career with the IAM, which began in 1980 when he joined Local 776A as an aircraft assembler after serving in the U.S. Navy.

The district transformed the atrium into a gallery showcasing photographs, memorabilia, and awards from Martinez’s tenure. As the IAM’s 14th International President and the first Latino member of its Executive Council, Martinez is recognized for his contributions to advancing the organization within the labor movement.

“This hall, this district, and this union has meant the world to me and my family,” said Martinez. “This union gave me a purpose when I was 20 years old. It gave me a shot at the American dream, to make a living and support my family. Together, we have improved the lives of countless IAM members.”

During his leadership, Martinez guided the IAM through significant events such as the COVID-19 pandemic by advocating for relief efforts that preserved jobs in airline and aerospace sectors. He also led efforts for expansion into new industries like healthcare and positioned IAM as a top AFL-CIO affiliate in National Labor Relations Board union election victories between 2018 and 2022 (https://www.nlrb.gov/news-outreach/press-releases).

Martinez introduced several membership programs during his presidency. These included initiatives supporting military veterans with VA claims assistance at no cost, addiction services, and women’s leadership development under IAM LEADS. He also focused on expanding opportunities for underrepresented groups within IAM.

The dedication ceremony also recognized District 776 President Directing Business Representative Paul Black and Business Representative Earnest Boone for their retirement after 45 years with IAM.

Martinez expressed appreciation for Joe Alviar, an IAM Business Representative, and his wife Linda for designing the atrium displays.

“Again I say thank you. It’s been a great honor,” said Martinez. “Our leadership, headed by our great International President Brian Bryant, has the IAM going in the right direction. I can’t wait to see where we’re going next, and I’m cheering all of you and our union on from retirement.”
