IAM Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez visited members of Local 1998 in Hawaii, highlighting the local’s role in supporting national security and defense. The visit underscored the importance of the work performed by Local 1998 within both the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Western Territory and the broader labor movement.

Local 1998 was established in 1951 and has maintained a strong presence in Hawaii for over seventy years. The local has contributed to the stability and growth of IAM’s Western Territory through its commitment to representation, advocacy, and service. Its continued existence points to an ongoing need for union representation in the region.

“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” said GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

Martinez emphasized that Hawaii’s geographic location makes Local 1998 especially significant both economically and nationally. Members are involved in industries critical to infrastructure and defense, making their work essential beyond their immediate workplaces. Their efforts have a direct impact on national security and defense operations.

He noted that many Local 1998 members support national defense operations through their skills, expertise, and professionalism, which help ensure operational readiness and mission success. Martinez stated that it is important for these workers to have strong union representation to protect their rights, secure fair contracts, and maintain safe working conditions.

The visit also highlighted the diversity among Local 1998’s membership, which reflects Hawaii’s multicultural environment. Martinez praised this diversity as a source of strength for both IAM and its Western Territory. He described unity across different backgrounds as an example of IAM’s inclusive values.

During his time in Hawaii, Martinez met with members and local leaders to discuss priorities, listen to concerns, and plan future actions. His visit demonstrated IAM’s commitment to maintaining close ties with locals throughout its territory.
