A group of leaders from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), headed by Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli and Chief of Staff Vinny Addeo, visited the Quaker Oats facility in Cedar Rapids. They were hosted by the Local 831 (District 6) Shop Committee to observe the facility’s production systems and learn about the contributions of IAM members.

The Cedar Rapids plant is recognized as the world’s largest cereal mill, producing well-known products such as Cap’n Crunch cereal.

“This tour offered an invaluable perspective on the commitment and skill our members bring to their work every day,” said Cicinelli. “Seeing the scale of operations and hearing directly from rank-and-file members strengthens our resolve to continuously advocate for fair wages, safe working conditions, and a seat at the table in shaping the future of labor at Quaker Oats.”

During their visit, IAM representatives addressed topics important to union members. These included workplace safety measures, opportunities for training, and economic concerns. The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen union representation within major employers.

Workers at the facility also spoke about current challenges and areas for improvement. Their feedback highlighted the value of union unity and leadership engagement as contract negotiations approach. Collaboration with other unions present at Quaker Oats—such as SMART and BCTGM—was noted as a factor that increases solidarity among workers.
