IAM Union General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes and Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen recently visited the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center (W3). The visit was part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ (IAM) efforts to support education, organizing, and leadership development for its members.
During their time at W3, Cervantes and Johnsen attended Organizing I classes conducted in both Spanish and English. They also participated in the Young Workers Leadership Program. The programs brought together students from across North America to improve their organizing skills and deepen their involvement with IAM.
Dora Cervantes emphasized the importance of offering organizing education in Spanish so that all members can access leadership tools. “Her visit amplified the IAM’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, education, and empowering members at every level of the union,” according to the statement.
Richie Johnsen acknowledged the dedication shown by organizers and young workers during his meetings with them, noting their enthusiasm even as the holidays approached.
Participants in the Young Workers program stated that having union leaders visit reinforced their significance within the labor movement and affirmed their place in union decision-making processes.
