Howard “Howie” Huestis, president of IAM Local 1746, has been recognized for his ongoing efforts to support the East Hartford community in Connecticut. Huestis, who grew up in East Hartford, leads initiatives that provide school supplies to children from families facing financial hardship.

“I grew up in this town. I am dedicated to this town,” said Huestis. “I know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of needing donations.”

Under Huestis’s leadership, members of the IAM Local 1746 Women’s Committee, including Therese Hervieux and Taylor Salmon, have worked with East Hartford Public Schools to distribute thousands of school supplies each year. The annual event takes place at East Hartford Green Park and provides items such as backpacks, notebooks, rulers, and pencils. The IAM Eastern Territory also contributes supplies for the effort.

Recently, at a Connecticut State Council meeting, Huestis received an IAM Human Rights Award from IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan and Chief of Staff Lorie Wilson. The award recognizes his role in organizing and maintaining the backpack rally event.

The initiative has grown over time to include booths from other community partners and sometimes health services, aiming to help students begin the school year prepared.
