The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) New Mexico State Council convened in Ruidoso, New Mexico, for a weekend event focused on strengthening union organizing, legislative involvement, and communication among its members. The meeting brought together delegates from IAM locals across the state to coordinate efforts aimed at increasing the union’s presence in workplaces and communities.

John Dyrcz, President of the IAM New Mexico State Council from Local 794, opened the meeting by emphasizing collaboration within the labor movement. “Our state council meeting went great,” said Dyrcz. “Over the past two days, we laid down a strong foundation for the 2026 election cycle and updated our bylaws to make sure we have solid ground for picking labor-friendly candidates and next year’s elections. I want to see continued participation, and I hope some new individuals will volunteer to give their time and talents to state council leadership. My message for our delegates is to stay engaged, activate, agitate, and organize.”

Dora Cervantes, IAM General Secretary-Treasurer, provided an update on the state of the union. She highlighted IAM’s recent growth, contract achievements, and ongoing national campaigns that aim to advance workers’ rights. Cervantes encouraged delegates to continue building on IAM’s tradition of advocacy.

Robert “Bobby” Martinez, General Vice President of IAM Western Territory, addressed issues facing federal employees and contract workers. He spoke about IAM’s role in advocating for fair pay and workplace protections.

Richie Johnsen, General Vice President of IAM Air Transport Territory, called on members to support air transport campaigns. He pointed out that successes in one sector benefit all members.

Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the IAM International President for the Rail Division, noted Local 331’s first participation in the council meeting and discussed challenges in the rail industry.

Other speakers included Loren Almeroth, Assistant Legislative and Political Director; and DeLane Adams, Assistant Communications Director.

Throughout the weekend, delegates discussed organizing strategies and leadership development while aiming to build stronger alliances with supportive elected officials. The council also updated its bylaws as part of preparations for upcoming elections.

NMSC officers include President John Dyrcz (Local 794), First Vice President Art Pardo (Local 2515), Second Vice President Virgil Thompson (Local 794), Secretary Treasurer Tina Davis (Local 794), Trustee Lynnelle Jimenez (Local 1635), Trustee Bud Duryea (Local 2515), and Trustee Ron More (Local 2515). The participating locals represent various regions including Albuquerque (Locals 794 and 1635), Alamogordo (Local 2515), and Belen for the rail division (Local 331).

Delegates concluded the meeting with a renewed commitment to strengthen union solidarity across New Mexico through ongoing communication and collective action.
