The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has announced that registration is open for its next Spanish Leadership I Class, scheduled for April 19-24, 2025. The class will take place at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center and is available to all IAM members and staff.

IAM encourages members to consider taking on leadership roles through this program, which aims to build confidence and skills for better representation and advocacy in the workplace. According to the organization, “As our membership continues to grow and diversify, the IAM’s Spanish Leadership I Class encourages members to step up and take on greater leadership roles – building the confidence and skills needed to better represent, advocate for, and stand alongside every member on the job.”

Those interested in attending are advised to contact their Local President, Business Representative, or General Chair as soon as possible. While fluency in Spanish is not mandatory, some understanding of the language is considered helpful. All instruction, books, and materials are provided in Spanish; however, the curriculum mirrors that of English-language leadership programs.

The curriculum focuses on developing leadership abilities while enhancing connections with Spanish-speaking members and communities. Topics covered include labor history, parliamentary procedure in local administration, steward responsibilities, human rights issues, organizing strategies, as well as government and politics. The programs are coordinated by the Spanish Language Working Group (SLWG), made up of IAM staff and members.

IAM highlights that participation in these programs does not affect a Local’s regular Leadership school allotment. Openings remain available for all levels of Spanish Leadership courses.

Since its beginning, IAM’s Spanish Leadership Program has aimed to be inclusive by providing a welcoming environment for those facing language barriers while also inviting participants who want to support colleagues whose primary language is Spanish. The union states: “Since its inception, the Spanish Leadership Program has been founded in inclusivity. It creates a welcoming space for members who may face language barriers, while also encouraging participants who simply have the desire to engage and stand in solidarity with our siblings whose primary language is Spanish.”

Other key dates for upcoming IAM Spanish-language leadership courses include July 26-31 for Spanish Leadership II and November 15-20 for Advanced Leadership.

IAM continues its commitment to comprehensive education by offering development opportunities in English, Spanish, and French so that all workers can access tools needed for advancement within both the union structure and broader labor movement: “The IAM continues to lead the labor movement in offering comprehensive education and leadership development in multiple languages, ensuring that no worker is left behind. Through programs in English, Spanish, and French, the IAM provides every member with the tools and knowledge to grow, organize, and advance within our union and the broader movement for working people.”
