IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen and other union leaders recently visited members at Alaska Airlines Cargo, meeting with mechanics from both Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines in Seattle and Hawaii. The visits come as workers prepare for a representation election between the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union) and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), prompted by the ongoing merger of Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines.
During these meetings, Johnsen addressed questions from union members about the upcoming vote. He publicly challenged AMFA to a debate regarding representation of aircraft maintenance technicians, stating his readiness to participate at any time or place. “Johnsen publicly challenged the smaller and weaker AMFA to a debate, emphasizing his willingness to meet at any time, any where to discuss issues at stake for the workforce.”
The IAM Union is seeking to retain its role representing airline mechanics as the merger moves forward. The outcome of this election will determine which union represents these workers during and after the integration process.
Video highlights from Johnsen’s visit are available online.
