The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union) has expressed its support for communities in Minnesota amid concerns about government actions that it says threaten constitutional rights. The union issued a statement emphasizing the importance of standing with workers and families affected by recent events.
According to IAM Union, the situation in Minnesota is “a serious test of our democracy and our collective commitment to the Constitution.” The organization highlighted its stance against “government authority… used to intimidate communities, suppress dissent, or detain people without due process,” asserting that labor organizations have a duty to respond clearly.
IAM Union President Brian Bryant stated, “The IAM Union stands in solidarity with the people of Minnesota, including union members and working families, who are demanding accountability and an end to actions that violate basic civil and constitutional rights. No worker should fear being targeted for speaking out, protesting peacefully, or simply existing in their community.”
Bryant also explained that the union is joining broader labor efforts to demonstrate visible support while protecting workers’ rights under existing contracts. He said, “Our focus is on visible solidarity and collective action, consistent with our collective bargaining agreements, that protect workers, their jobs, and the contracts they have fought hard to secure. Labor is showing up to oppose the unconstitutional detention of innocent Minnesotans and the targeting of people—no matter their immigration status—while ensuring that workers are not placed in further jeopardy.”
He added: “The IAM Union has always believed that dignity on the job and dignity in our communities are inseparable. Working people build this country, sustain its economy, and keep it moving every day. When we stand together with discipline and unity, we can demand justice while safeguarding one another.”
The union outlined several ways members can show support for those affected in Minnesota. These include sharing statements from local labor organizations such as the Minnesota AFL-CIO through social media channels; participating in solidarity activities like wearing blue on January 23rd; displaying candles; holding faith vigils; writing letters to corporations based in Minnesota; and contacting Congress regarding oversight of immigration enforcement agencies.
