The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union) has announced the passing of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr., highlighting his long-standing dedication to justice, equality, and workers’ rights.
Rev. Jackson previously addressed IAM members in Des Moines, Iowa during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. At that event, he discussed the importance of maintaining balance among labor, management, and government. He criticized policies under the Reagan Administration for favoring management over working families.
His involvement with IAM went beyond speeches. During the Eastern Airlines strike, Rev. Jackson joined striking members on the picket line, wearing an “On Strike” sign and showing solidarity with workers seeking economic justice.
The union notes that Rev. Jackson helped bridge the labor movement and civil rights movement throughout his life by emphasizing that racial justice is closely connected to fair wages, safe workplaces, and organizing rights.
In a statement from IAM Union: “On behalf of the IAM, we extend profound condolences to the Jackson family, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and all who celebrate the extraordinary life of Rev. Jackson. He taught us that ‘I am somebody!’ and to ‘Keep hope alive!’ Today, as we honor his memory, we recommit ourselves to that charge, standing strong for justice, fairness, and dignity for all working people.”
IAM represents about 600,000 active and retired members across industries such as aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, railroad transit healthcare automotive in both United States and Canada.
