Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) from across Missouri gathered in Jefferson City for the IAM Missouri State Council, according to an April 7 announcement. The meeting focused on supporting working families and protecting workers’ rights.
The gathering comes at a time when efforts are underway to change Missouri’s referendum process, which some say could give corporate interests more influence over laws that affect unions and wages. Union members discussed strategies to counter these efforts, which they argue would make it easier for so-called “right-to-work” laws to be enacted.
During their time at the Capitol, IAM members lobbied elected officials about several key issues. These included opposing paycheck deception bills, advocating for stronger workforce development programs, raising the minimum wage, and resisting attempts to weaken child labor protections.
Throughout the conference, participants received updates from various departments within IAM—including leadership from the International President’s Office as well as representatives from the Midwest Territory, Political and Legislative Department, and Communications Department. The event also brought together other unions affiliated with Missouri AFL-CIO. Attendees heard remarks from both Democratic and Republican legislators who support worker issues. Speakers included Senate Democratic Leader Doug Beck; State Representatives Keri Ingle, Betsy Fogle, Stephen Webber, David Casteel, Jeff Amato; and State Senator Karla May.
Organizers thanked DeWitt Darity (President), Dwight Terry (Secretary-Treasurer), and other Executive Board members of the Missouri State Council for their roles in coordinating the conference.
