The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union announced on Mar. 26 the passing of Mary Allen Fones, who served as kitchen supervisor at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. Fones died on March 15 at the age of 76.
Fones worked for 33 years in the kitchen at the Winpisinger Center, where she was recognized for her strong work ethic, dedication, and positive influence on colleagues. She started as a cook, advanced to kitchen leadperson, and became kitchen supervisor in 1995 before retiring in 2013. She was among the first three staff members hired at the center by former IAM International President William W. Winpisinger.
Throughout her career, Fones was known for bringing humor and camaraderie to her workplace. The union said she made busy shifts feel lighter with her jokes and laughter that turned coworkers into lifelong friends.
“IAM Union International President Brian Bryant said: ‘Mary’s impact on the Winpinsinger Center is measured by all the laughs and smiles she gave our members and staff over her career. She touched so many of our members’ lives with her lovable personality and cooking skills. Our union is better off for her many years of dedication and we send our deepest condolences to Mary’s loved ones.’”
Fones was also remembered as a talented cook who expressed care through food, enjoyed sharing meals with family, especially nachos, which were among her favorites.
A lifelong resident of Hollywood, Maryland, Fones participated in various community events in southern Maryland including activities at the local Moose lodge. The IAM said flowers or memorial contributions may be made to Patuxent Moose Lodge in honor of Mary Fones.
