IAM Union members from across Nebraska recently convened for the bi-annual meeting of the Nebraska State Council, which serves as the political arm of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) in the state. The gathering aimed to coordinate advocacy efforts, increase member participation, and prepare for upcoming midterm elections.
Delegates representing Locals 31, 180, 602, 612, 1569, and District 6 discussed legislative priorities and shared updates from their respective locals. A significant topic at the meeting was the importance of electing candidates who support labor rights such as collective bargaining, fair wages, and retirement security.
Nebraska State Council President Mike Helmink led the meeting with Secretary-Treasurer Dan Janak. Helmink highlighted why member involvement is crucial during election cycles. “Elections have real consequences for our members and their families,” said Helmink. “If we want leaders who stand with working people, we need to stay organized, informed, and active. Political action is how we protect our contracts and our future.”
Attendees also heard from IAM Assistant Political Director Ty Richardson about national trends in the midterm elections and strategies for grassroots mobilization. IAM Midwest Territory International Representatives Kevin Murch and Chris Tucker expressed continued support for Nebraska’s political initiatives.
The event underscored that strong political engagement remains a priority for advancing the interests of IAM Union members and working families throughout Nebraska.
