The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program has reached the halfway point in its six-week application window. As of now, more than 130,000 student applications have been submitted and over 2,000 schools have registered to participate. The application period opened on February 4 and will close on March 17, leaving three weeks for families to apply.

According to Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock, “Texas families are making their voices heard and signing up for school choice in huge, record-breaking numbers.” Hancock also reminded families not to miss the March 17 deadline: “With spring break around the corner, we don’t want the March 17 deadline to sneak up on anyone. So, if you’re considering applying, we encourage you to take a few minutes now to complete your application.”

On the first day of enrollment alone, more than 8,000 applications were submitted within the first hour and over 42,000 were received by the end of that day.

Applications are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Families who apply at any time during the window have an equal chance of receiving funding. They may also edit their applications or upload additional documents until March 17.

Hancock added, “TEFA represents a significant investment in expanding educational opportunity and supporting long-term workforce readiness. Our team is committed to ensuring students have access to learning environments that prepare them for success.”
