Marc Knecht, Ph.D., has been appointed as the new dean of the College of Science at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He will take on responsibilities including oversight of academic programs, faculty development, research initiatives, and student success efforts within the college. In fall 2025, the college reported enrollment exceeding 3,500 students.
“Dr. Knecht is an experienced academic leader for one of our most important colleges,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson.
Knecht’s academic background includes a doctorate in materials chemistry from Vanderbilt University and postdoctoral research at The University of Texas at Austin. He began his faculty career as an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Kentucky.
In 2011, Knecht joined the University of Miami where he held several leadership positions. Notably, he served five years as chair of the Department of Chemistry and was involved with interdisciplinary research through roles such as associate director and member of the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Biomedical Nanotechnology Institute (BioNIUM).
His teaching experience covers a range of large-enrollment courses and involvement in undergraduate research and mentoring across all levels.
“The College of Science will play a major role in UTEP’s accelerating trajectory as a national research university, and Marc Knecht is well prepared to lead that progress,” noted Provost John Wiebe, Ph.D. “He brings the experience and energy necessary to build on the strong foundation that exists in the College.”
Knecht is recognized internationally for his work in bio-inspired nanotechnology and materials chemistry. His research interests include biomimetic materials synthesis, catalysis, environmental remediation, and energy-related nanotechnologies. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and received funding from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and American Chemical Society.
“UTEP’s mission, momentum and impact resonate with me, particularly its commitment to student success and its growing national profile in research,” said Knecht. “The College of Science has a strong foundation, and I look forward to working collaboratively with faculty, staff and students to strengthen academic programs, support faculty scholarship and grow interdisciplinary research that addresses regional and global challenges.”
Knecht will begin his role on July 1. He will relocate to El Paso with his spouse Leslie Knecht, Ph.D., their two children, and their dog.
