At a ceremony held on November 20, 2025, Heather Wilson, president of The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), received the Ohtli Award from Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de León, Consul General of Mexico. The award recognizes Wilson’s leadership and contributions to the Mexican and Mexican-American community in education.
The Ohtli Award is the highest honor given by the Government of Mexico to individuals who have improved living conditions and created development opportunities for Mexican communities abroad. The term “Ohtli” comes from the Nahuatl language and means “path,” symbolizing those who open pathways for others.
“Mexico is a key strategic partner for UTEP,” Wilson said. “I am humbled to accept this award on behalf of our faculty, staff and students. Personally, it is an honor to be recognized by the government of Mexico. I look forward to continuing our partnership.”
Since becoming UTEP president in 2019, Wilson has led programs that promote access to higher education for students of Mexican and Hispanic origin. These initiatives focus on retention, academic success, and social mobility for young people in the border region.
Under her leadership, UTEP has expanded cooperation with Mexican educational institutions through joint research projects, academic exchanges, and cross-border collaborations. These efforts have strengthened UTEP’s role as a leader in educational excellence and as a binational link between communities.
Wilson has also supported cultural and community activities organized by the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso that foster pride in Mexican identity and strengthen ties within the border community.
“It is a true honor to present the Ohtli Award to Dr. Heather Wilson,” Ibarra Ponce de León said. “She is an invaluable ally whose leadership, commitment and vision embody the deepest values of this distinction: opening pathways, building bridges and transforming lives through education.”
